Introduction
Uni:Note helps you organize handwritten notes and PDFs on iPad and review them using recordings, sticky markers and study tools.
Which devices and OS versions are supported?
Requires an iPad running iPadOS 17.0 or later.
Write with Apple Pencil, or enable Draw with Finger to write with one finger. When it is on, scroll with two fingers. When it is off, one finger scrolls unless Scroll with Two Fingers is on in Settings → Note Settings. No separate app account is required. Japanese, English, Korean, German, Traditional Chinese and French are supported.
What does a button do?
On Home, Problem Sets and Timetable, tap ? at the top right; on the note screen, choose Button Guide in the More (…) menu. Explanations of the buttons and gestures appear over the screen; tap anywhere to close them. On a new installation, they appear automatically once the first time you open each screen. They cannot be shown in a narrow window, so widen the window first.
New installations also start with the sample subject Getting Started, containing the note How to use Uni:Note. You can write in it, and delete it by long-pressing its card when you no longer need it.
Notes and attachments
What if a note stops growing or cannot be found?
A note is limited to 150 pages. Create another note in the subject when needed. Leaving a new title blank uses the date. Search only covers entered note titles, not handwriting, page text, PDFs or subject names.
Notebook orientation cannot be changed after creation. Deleting a folder keeps its subjects. Trash can restore subjects and notes, but not deleted pages, problem sets or permanently erased items. Protected notes cannot be written in. In note lists, tap a note to open it and long-press it for Edit, Protect and Delete; Delete moves the note to Trash immediately.
Subjects and notes in Trash are permanently removed during cleanup after 30 days. Restore anything you need before then.

Can I zoom or move a handwritten area?
Pinch with two fingers to zoom. Range Move selects and moves whole handwriting strokes. Move photos, PDFs and sticky markers separately.

Can I edit typed text or table cells after placement?
Placed text can be moved, resized and rotated, but its wording cannot be edited afterward. Text is placed when you tap outside the input, choose Text again or tap × on the Text Input label; hiding the keyboard alone does not end input. Tables are shapes: cells do not accept direct text input, and rows or columns cannot be changed after placement.
What if I cannot move a photo or PDF?
With Draw with Finger off, double-tap a locked photo or PDF to unlock it, then tap to select. With it on, tap the Edit button on the side opposite the palette so it turns blue, then tap the material. This is separate from Range Move for handwriting. To erase only handwriting, use Clear Page in eraser settings.
PDF insertion still respects the 150-page limit. Split large documents across notes if needed. Photo, document-photo, PDF insertion and export steps are in the visual guide.
Study support
Why are recording or transcription unavailable?
Recording, playback and transcript viewing require one-time Premium or monthly Premium Plus. Microphone access is required when recording. Transcription needs iPadOS 26 or later plus a supported Apple speech model and language. The app explains unsupported conditions; recording and playback remain available.
Recordings split every 30 minutes, with five per note. When Uni:Note moves to the background, the recording is saved and stopped automatically. Under Settings → Study Support → Recording Support, turning Prioritize Transcription Accuracy on favors accuracy and turning it off favors speed; changes apply from the next recording. AI summaries use existing transcript text, not audio-file uploads. Include recording audio in a backup for restored or Pocket playback.
New installations of 4.0.0 start with Prioritize Transcription Accuracy off.
Where are sticky markers and AI tools?
Select Sticky Marker in the palette; no Study Support setting needs to be turned on. Tap each sticky marker separately to reveal or hide it; the old whole-page mask switch is no longer used. Switch the tool details to Sticky Note to place sticky notes you can write on. Circle to Solve is a button on the note navigation bar; show or hide it in Settings → Note Settings → Note Screen.
AI answers, problem-set generation and summaries use AI Balance, shown in Settings and the plan screen. Creating or editing problem sets manually does not use AI Balance. Long passages, open-ended questions or diagram-heavy problems may not be supported. Check results against your materials.
What changes for problem sets in 4.0.0?
In Problem Sets, the + menu offers Create One at a Time (handwriting or keyboard), Create from Paste and Create from File (TSV/CSV, up to 300 questions). Bulk creation requires Premium or Premium Plus; creating one question at a time and studying are free. Swipe right for Learned and left for Not Yet, redo only the Not Yet questions after a round, resume later and open the source note beside the question. Problem sets are grouped by subject.
Data
How are backups, stored data and diagnostics handled?
Notes are stored in the app. Easy Backup, available with Premium or Premium Plus, saves and restores an iCloud file; it does not sync notes automatically. Zip export and file restoration are available in Free. Restoring starts immediately without confirmation and replaces the current data, so export your current data first. Follow the app’s instruction to reopen it after restoration. Problem sets are included in backups; to load them in Uni:Note Pocket, update Pocket to the latest version.
Technical crash diagnostics may be sent through Firebase Crashlytics, and usage information through Google Analytics for Firebase. Crash investigation may include handwriting statistics such as stroke counts, but never handwriting content or note names. Note text, handwriting, images, PDFs and recording contents are not included in diagnostic logs. See the Privacy Policy in the support links below for details.
Purchases
How do Free, Premium and Premium Plus differ?
Free allows 10 subjects and 6 notes per subject. One-time Premium and monthly Premium Plus remove those limits and enable recording and Easy Backup. Premium grants 500 AI Balance at the start of each month; Premium Plus grants 10,000 per subscription period. Unused period balance does not roll over. Range Move and note-title search are also available in Free. Check current prices and purchases in the app.
Creating problem sets in bulk from pasted text or a file requires Premium or Premium Plus. Creating one question at a time and studying are free.
How do I purchase AI Balance?
Check the amount and purchase conditions in the plan screen before buying additional AI Balance. AI answers, problem-set generation and summaries use it; separately purchased balance does not expire. If a purchase has not appeared, use Update Purchase Status before buying again.
